Franco Battiato was born in Jonia, near Catania (Italy) in 1945. Since the early 70s he has been actively involved in the research and experimental trends throughout Europe. In 1981 he released “La voce del Padrone” which positioned him at the top of the Italian charts for a year and sold over one million copies. Battiato soon became a ‘case study’. His work was educational material for intellectuals and a source of inspiration for musicians.
From then on, Battiato took on a very intense schedule releasing numerous pop albums as well as lyric works including “Genesi”, “Gilgamesh” and “ll Cavaliere dell’Intelletto”. He also created the lyrical “Messa Arcaica” and “Campi Magnetici”, a series devoted for the ballet. At the same time he launched L’Ottava publishing house in collaboration with Longanesi and a record house with the same label focusing on ‘frontier’ music-a fusion between cultured composition, popular song and ethnic music.
In 2002 Battiato marked his debut in cinema when he co-wrote “PERDUToAMOR” with philosopher Manlio Sgalambro. The film released in theatres in May 2003, tells the story of Ettore as a young boy growing into a man in Sicily and Milan during the 50s and 60s.
In December 2004 he directed six episodes of the television show “Bitte keine réclame” for RAI DOC (soon available on terrestrial television). The show is written and hosted along with philosopher Manlio Sgalambro and will invite musicians, thinkers, philosophers and mystics involved in artistic and spiritual research regarding the links between the East and the West.
