VIVA
competition
When: 29 April, 2005 Where: Fabrica What: Announcement
Three joint winners of Viva, the competition launched by Fabrica whose aim was to find an art project that could give new life to the cedar of Lebanon around which the communication research centre, designed by Tadao Ando, was built. However, none of the entries (some 350) which the jury considered the most interesting from an aesthetic point of view was feasible in practical terms.
The jury, which included the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, considered four of the projects submitted - three of equal merit and one special mention - worthy of interest and were chosen for their creativeness and intrinsic originality.
The following projects are the joint winners, with Tadao Ando’s comments:
Necrodendron, by Philippos Zanettos and Johannes Muller Lotze (Greece and the United Kingdom)
“For its philosophical approach in addition to its aesthetics. The dead tree is transformed into nourishment for a new life that is forming through a process of metempsychosis.”
What’s Up, by Yann Fanch Vauleon (Portugal)
“For its imaginativeness and dreaminess. For creating a form that continues to transform itself.”
The Tree Nursery, by Ben Addy (United Kingdom)
“For its magic. The dead tree’s rebirth is like transplanting a young tree to a vase.”
Special mention:
The Aquarium, by Yoko Kojima and Tsukasa Tagawa (Japan)“For its poetry. Water, life’s primary element, once again performs its original function and re-assimilates the dead tree.”
Each project selected will receive 2000 euro each and if the winners have the necessary requisites they will be invited to take part in a two-week trial for a Fabrica study grant.
