Characters for Parallel Universes
An exhibition at Fabrica Features Lisboa

When: 22 July, 2005
Where: Fabrica Features Lisboa
What: Exhibition

On July 22nd, Fabrica will present at the Fabrica Features space in Lisbon “Characters for Parallel Universes”, a gallery of anthropomorphic visual entities representing, through their unpredictability, playfulness and irony, the spirit of Fabrica and of ten of its young researchers.

Each character, which can have a human or an animal shape, is designed and printed in two different colors: the blue representing its personality and strength and the red, representing instead the “possible universes” – situations, environments, contexts - in which the character can be contextualized. Visitors will be able not only to see the blue and red combinations of character and universe, but also the figure “on its own” by the use of a transparent plexiglas filter which eliminates the red of the composition., creating in this way a wide range of visual possibilities.

The ten Fabrica young artists invited to participate to the exhibition have played with the shape of the character and its integration with the red background, revealing and hiding elements, creating optical and kinetic effects, using different techniques such as vector and hand drawings, texts, photos, stencils.

Invited artists:
Conrado Almada, videomaker, Brazil
Luca Mathia Bertoncello, designer, Italy
Maik Bluhm, graphic designer, Germany
Isotta Dardilli, graphic designer, Italy

The "Characters" theme will also be the thread of next issue of FAB magazine, available from September 2005.

Fabrica Features is a network of cultural and commercial spaces - the first of which are already open in Bologna, Lisbon and Hong Kong - where one-person shows, artist exhibits, concerts, video projections, live performances, workshops and lectures become key opportunities for gathering together. Within Fabrica Features there is also room for different cultural “products” which define modern life: cds, books, videos and design objects created by Fabrica or selected across the world. These objects become a real gallery of modern art, which is no longer just an object to look at, but a concrete product that is both useful and accessible to visitors.
