In competition at the 23rd edition of the Turin Film Festival the documentary “Solitude at the end of the world” by Carlos Casas and Fernando Zuber produced by Fabrica and COLORS FILMS.
“Solitude at the end of the world” is the last of a series of documentaries based on COLORS magazine experience, that want to bring attention to major, diversity-based themes and to give voice to the stories of ordinary people: from Hong Kong, to Patagonia, from the Rocinha slum to the Aral lake.
SINOPSIS:
In one of the least populated regions of the world, a few men lead lives of total solitude, spending months on end alone. This documentary tells the story of three of these men. Isolated from the world for different reasons, they survive in a suspended time in one of the world’s most difficult environments.
DIRECTORS’ STATEMENT:
We were looking for cases of extreme solitude, trying to understand what drives these men to loneliness and isolation. We studied their stories, their reasons, their inner strength and their suffering. We lived with them in silence, trying to catch up with their rhythms and their customs and to capture their stories with beauty, dignity and dedication. We were interested in the atmospheric feeling of isolation and its relation with the Patagonian landscape, trying to capture time in these extreme situations. The documentary became an amazing anthropological and physical experience for both ourselves and the story we told.
DIRECTORS' BIOGRAPHIES:
Carlos Casas studied Fine Arts, Cinema and Design in Barcelona and Vienna. In 1998 he was awarded a scholarship at Fabrica, the Benetton group’s communication research center. In 2000 his short Film “Afterwords”, produced by Marco Müller and Fabrica Cinema was presented at the Venice Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival and Rencontres cinématographiques in Paris. In 2001 he began a series of documentaries for COLORS Magazine. He traveled to Patagonia to do fieldwork which in 2002 became the 24min “Patagonia”. In 2003 he shot a 52 min documentary, “Rocinha. Daylight of a Favela” on location in one of Rio de Janeiro’s biggest favelas. In 2004 he finished “Aral. Fishing in an invisible sea” about the lives of the three remaining generations of fishermen living off the Aral sea which won the best documentary award at the Turin Film Festival 2004. Aral was also selected for the Rotterdam Film Festival 2005, Visions du Réel, Nyon 2005, One World Prague 2005, Documenta Madrid 2005. In May 2005 he completed the 52 min version of the Patagonia film “Solitude at the end of the world”.
Fernando Zuber studied cinematography in Buenos Aires and worked on the production of various television programs, short films and feature films. In 2000 he was awarded a scholarship at Fabrica, the Benetton group’s communication research center, where he started developing a series of documentaries for COLORS Magazine, “Trash” 16 min, “Choi Hung Estate” 7 min, and “Patagonia” 24min. He currently lives and works in Buenos Aires where he works as director for advertising, television, entertainment, set designing and theatre. In May 2005 he finished the 52 min version of the Patagonia film “Solitude at the end of the world”.
