Drawing inspiration from a kind of initiation rite practiced among students from the schools of Johannesburg, Rhode draws objects in chalk on a wall or a pavement to later interact with them. His body comes in contact with a designed world, an artificial space. His actions are documented as a series of snapshots, as diverse elements of one argument that give birth to performance, video animation, video and sculpture. The background is always contemporary cities: the world of hip hop and street culture, popular sports, the art of survival on the fringe. Urban rituals reinterpreted, with ironic conceptual abstractions, such as the silent concerts Microphone and Air Guitar where Rhode's body performs with the drawings.

Robin Rhode, a South African artist from Capetown, lived in Johannesburg for 15 years before moving to Berlin in 1991. A transversal personality whose work represents one of the new recent emersions in the panorama of international artists, moving language into new territory, linking the disciplines of performance, design and photography, the new taste of mixed genres. Self-taught in drawing, after his first exhibition in 1999 at the South Africa National Gallery in Capetown he was invited to major international contemporary art centers (Istanbul, Anversa, New York, Mexico City). His performances at ICA in London, participation in How Latitudes become Form (Walker Center - Minneapolis) and in the recent I Still Believe in Miracles/Drawing Space at ARC in Paris, have brought attention to his 'bushie-agtige' art to world level. In Italy his work was included in 2005 at the 51st Biennale Arte di Venezia and the group show Sculpture in Non-Objective Way by Tucci Russo gallery.
