EAST AKA WEST
In trance
Date: 02 April, 2003
A project by Riccardo Nova in collaboration with Fabrica
A 60 minutes musical piece whose principal idea is to explore and put into relation different musical idioms, different ways of perceiving/expressing musical time and space, in an attempt to discover complementarities, possibilities of integration, linguistic synergism.
Classical music from Southern India (Karnatika music), which has for ages developed a highly complex perception of time; and techno music whose efficacy lies on the continuous and obsessive "affirmation" of a rhythmic centre, which however allows a very efficient dramatic use of time suspension, a use that is therefore opposed to the fulfilment or contrast of expectations given by the "flexibility" of Karnatika music.
“There are enormous potential of interaction/complementarily between Karnatika and techno music like the "rhythmic craftsmanship" of the Indian musician modulates timbres that are typical of techno music,” says Riccardo Nova.
The project was the result of the collaboration between the composer Riccardo Nova and Fabrica creative staff which gave a large contribution to the realization of Riccardo’s ideas, both with the partecipation of the two Indian musicians, Vidwan B. C. Manjunath (Mridangam, Kenukol) and Vidwan Srihari Rangaswamy (Mridangam, Cangira, Tavil), and the artistic coordination of Andrea Molino, head of the Fabrica Musica department.
A video documentary realized in India and Italy by Fabrica video maker Federica Palmarin and illustrating religious ceremonies, is part of the performance.
East aka West première was held in Stuttgard at the Musik der Jahrhunderte Festival on April, 2nd, 2003 at Pragsattel Theaterhaus (Siemensstrasse, 11), and on April, 6th, 2003 during the Zagreb Biennial at the Pauk Hall.
