ROCINHA, RACCONTI DI FAVELA
a book and dvd by Fabrica

Date: 14 November, 2004

Edited by Fabrica and published by Mondadori, this is a book and Dvd about life in Rocinha, the world’s biggest slum, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. A huge slum populated by hundreds of thousands of people who try to live normal lives even though they are in a desperate situation. It’s a community with its own rules and hierarchies. A real city within a city, both real and surreal at the same time, as seen in the documentary (screened on the 29 November 2004 at the 45th edition of the Festival dei Popoli). The movie was made by Fabrica’s young video-makers filming in houses and schools, in the depths of a city that it is impossible to imagine, looking into the lives of some of its inhabitants.

Later the writers from Fabrica’s creative writing department made up some stories drawing inspiration from Rocinha’s real personalities seen in the documentary. They took to heart the principle according to which romantic lies and fictional truths balance each other out and blend, authorizing the process that recreates a parallel and believable reality through imagination (a process that boasts many followers in the history of literature).

The result is this book. Those who watch the accompanying Dvd will be able to recognize a name or two, a few traces of the characters that become the protagonists of the short stories. They will simultaneously find themselves confronted with separate entities, independent from every documentary reference but still so “real” and plausible.
And so one voyage comes from another: from an overseas crossing with video cameras and recorders to the more personal and contingent but no less ambitious one of fiction.

The authors: for the book Sara Beltrame, Filippo Betto, Leonora Sartori, Florian Topernpong, Francesca De Pascale: five young writers, some are already published, others are not, they are all part of the creative writing team at Fabrica, the Benetton group’s communication research center. The documentary was directed by Carlos Casas with the collaboration of Batman Zavarese, from Fabrica’s video department.
