Art takes the bus. A social intervention in Rome.
UNDERGROUNDS - SOTTOSUOLI
Two buses customized with panels for a travelling installation and 18 artworks, including videos and photos have toured throughout Rome presenting the initiative “undergrounds”. This project created by the artists Pablo Echaurren and Alexander Jakhnagiev focusing on borderline lives is devoted to the world of tramps and homeless people. Starting March 27th, these two art buses have visited public schools in Rome, promoting this socially conscious artistic initiative. "Undergrounds", curated by Echaurren and Jakhnagiev is divided into two sections.
The first part, curated by Echaurren, brings into question the value these beggars have through a symbolic act of buying.. The panels that these beggars panhandle, are bought, thus creating a false act of charity.
After being purchased the signs become part of the artworks used by 12 artists including Echaurren, Marco Antonio Abbagnara, Alessio Ancillai, Daria Calvelli, Alessandro Caruso, Pamela Cento, Luigi Del Greco, Sonia Mazzoli, Renato Meneghetti, Ezia Mitolo, Pierpaolo Parogni, Remo Soprani.
The second part, curated by Jakhnagiev, is a performance during whichthe artists have invited 6 tramps to lie down on a sheet and leave traces of their silhouette. In this way the artist has metaphorically stolen the shadows of their body thus making the homeless people the subjects of the artworks. These outlines have been recontextualized by the artists and are displayed on the ground to put the audience and passersby in the uncomfortable position of literally walking on the tramps' shadows.
This provocative social intervention demands viewers to consider the individuals rejected by society.
