Martin Creed's playful world
Martin Creed's playful world
Until June 18th, 2006 the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi presents a new project by British artist Martin Creed commissioned for the spaces of the Arengario in Piazza del Duomo in Milan.
Martin Creed’s objects, words and sounds come from everyday life. Searching for the zero degree of sculpture, the British artist uses the simplest materials to create a world in which obsessions and fantasies radically alter reality. Drawing attention to even the smallest forgotten detail of our daily lives, Martin Creed’s installations, drawings and sculptures invite the audience to look at the universe from a different point of view.
Any interpretation is valid in Martin Creed’s playful world. Everything is Going to Be Alright, the neon sign presented in Times Square, New York, is a declaration of optimism and at the same time an ironical comment on consumerism and on our dark present. Half The Air In a Given Space is an infinite multitude of coloured balloons filling up museums’ and galleries’ spaces: a new reading of classic contemporary art works (from The Artist’s Breath by Piero Manzoni to Andy Warhol’s Silver Clouds) but also a playground where to become children again. Martin Creed’s light minimalism can also be extreme, taking the form of radical gestures such as Lights Going On and Off, presented at the Tate Gallery, London, where the entire work consisted of nothing more than a light switching on and off in the gallery.
Rhythm and music are part of Martin Creed’s table of the elements. The artist has crystallized the passing of time with a series of modified metronomes, he transformed a piano into an awkward machine which opens by itself and slam shut, and he has organized and played gigs with his rock band. Each single fragment of reality becomes a stimulus for Martin Creed to return to the roots of problems, to invent new absurd solutions, and to demonstrate bizarre theories.
