Northern Ireland based Northern Salmon Co. recently discovered that their entire fish stock of salmon had been wiped out by a swarm of foreign jellyfish who swam their way up all the way from the Mediterranean.
Pelagia noctiluca, who normally only stings swimmers off the coasts of France, Spain and Italy (and never killing them), floated over cages in Glenarm Bay, prompting head UK fishery officer Mark McCoughan to assume new stock wouldn't be ready until autumn 2008 when fish in nearby Red Bay were mature enough. Days after the assessment, however, the jellyfish had taken out this stock as well. The overall loss cost NSC £1 million ($2 million, €1.4 million).
So the real question is – was this a natural movement, are we overfishing, or is it proof that we are creating warmer waters?
