Prix Ars Electronica 2008, Honorary Mention Interactive Art
I first saw this project when I went to an Interactivos workshop in Madrid last June; Julian's project was on display at the Prado Medialab, where he completed the project at a previous Interactivos workshop. As a prototype, it has gone through a lot of user testing during its installation. It's really a beautiful piece.
It consists of a box with different patterns on each side; a camera is pointed towards the box (and the user). When the program detects a pattern, an image is superimposed onto a side of the box via an overhead projection pointed towards a wall in front of the visitor. This view shows a 3-dimensional space within the box with a figure inside that can move to and fro by tilting the physical box itself. When the figure inside the space approaches a door, it can then move to another room; you find out which room its in by rotating the box and looking for it in the projection. It's fun to play with, too!
