Golden Nica - HYBRID ART
Pollution and smoke is made apparent in unusual ways with the 'Pollstream' project, which explores man-made clouds through a collection of ideas and images. Our very own judge and boss, Andy, is seen here smoking inside the exhibition space in one of their constructions. This light bulb responds to a high amount of smoke and emits a warning (red flash and an alarm) to alert one of excess smoke in the area. The engagement of the piece through smoke is a poetic means of activation, and ironically enough, it makes one want to smoke.
Another one of their creations is a tiny remote controlled car, set loose in New York City. A smoke bomb is affixed to its tailpipe so that wherever it rides, it leaves behind a trail of brightly colored smoke. Quite cute, with an amazingly deft operator handling the remote control.
The most prominent and socially engaging piece is the projection of an outline of a cloud onto smoke billowing out of a smokestack. This encourages people to use less electricity and displays the realtime usage via the cloud outline. The result is a beautiful, inspiring and socially responsible display of information.
